Draw Every Day of the Month Challenge #Drawtober2020
October is the perfect month for halloween horrors and prompt lists for ink drawings. The official Inktober list is even sponsored by an animated film this year. Tons of alternative prompts have sprung up to keep up the annual tradition going without the licensed brands in the way.

Gregor Docherty

A native to the shores of California with an artistic eye for beauty. Gregor is an expressive painter and mixed-media graphic artist. His craftsman like control of his materials can be seen in the sign art and portraits he makes.

Some of the funnest work is the coolest, like doing the pet portraits and custom paint jobs to give everyday items a little more flavor.

Growing up in Bolinas (CA), West Marin, I was always surrounded by beautiful landscapes, the ocean, and artists. While I was encouraged as an artist in elementary and middle school, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I decided to take it more seriously. A large part of that was the discovery of water colors! I enjoy the free flow of the paints and the various techniques that allow me to capture the subject the way I see it. When people see my paintings I want them to know what it’s like to be there; not only visually, but the sounds and smells as well. If I’m able to capture that place in time then it will always be there for the viewer.

Drawing and painting also serves a “release” and relaxes my body and mind. When I’m in that zone there’s nothing else I’m thinking of.

As an elementary school teacher I try to incorporate art into the day as often as possible. Tapping into a child’s artistic self at a young age can make a lifelong impact.

I’m still developing as an artist to find my own style and message, but that will come with practice and experience.

Poster Art Brings Good Design to the Masses
Poster art has a special place for art historians and collectors. From ancient beginnings, pop artists helped make screen printed graphics a fine art. How to price such ubiquitous imagery and materials suited only for mass-production? Street artists today make it clear that the control of the iconography around us goes both ways. There is even room for comics and graphic illustration on the auction block.

When it comes to vintage posters, the value is often in the nostalgic importance of the live music it was advertising. A great concert can live on forever. Silk-screens, lithography and woodblock printing makes each one a unique handmade craft.

A mass-produced canvas print or digital print can be equally special. Buying prints directly from an artist can be a more affordable way to get a piece compared to original art. Making art more accessible means more people will have it in their lives. Some of the most memorable parts of our life come and go. Just like a poster.

Learn to Develop Video Games with Unity Software
Our next workshop will be a crash-course in Unity 3D for designers. If you are somebody that has always wanted to be part of designing a game this is a good place to start. We have a series of projects that include all the assets you need to follow along. 2D/3D artists will have a chance to integrate original art.

The best way to learn is to jump right in and make it work. Be sure you can install the software on a computer that meets the system requirements: https://unity3d.com/unity/system-requirements

The goal of this course is to give artists, writers and game industry outsiders a tool-kit for making playable games.

Working with Digital Art Techniques
1. One way to get started is with a drawing tablet hooked up to a computer and monitor. You will have a surface to draw on with a wireless pen called a stylus. It allows you to have natural variation needed to achieve what you can not with a mouse. Use free software like GIMP, Krita and MediBang. Overall price/quality often comes down to the amount of pressure sensitivity and the brand.
2. Tablet or laptop that works with a pressure sensitive pen like an iPad with apple Pen or the Surface Pro. There are a lot of apps out there but you might need to run desktop software.
3. Go professional. Get a drawing canvas that hooks up to your computer or one that stands alone.
